The series aims to give an appreciation and to leverage research-based solutions to solving human, coastal and ocean health issues targeting industries capable of sustaining coastal communities in North Carolina. Marine microalgae (phytoplankton) have great potential as a commercial feedstock for biofuel or feed production because they do not require freshwater, grow faster than conventional crops and can use non-arable land. As such they may provide a predictable and consistent high quality source of raw material for North Carolina’s growing needs for animal and aquafeeds as well as a sustainable source of biofuel. The presentation reviewed the motivation and current state of the science, including aspects that could specifically benefit sustainable local economies.
